RDOD

Fast, Fast, Fast, Slow, Slow

Target: TG2
Load: One 6-round magazine
Additional Equipment: Patience

Notes: This drill builds on skills previously considered: draw, stance, grip, accuracy, etc. What we should be concentrating on primarily though, is change in tempo between drawing the gun and the fine aiming required to successfully complete the drill. I typically teach this as "fast, fast, fast, slow, slow". In other words, draw the gun as fast as you can reasonably, accomplish a good grip, present the gun just as quickly, but determine a "place" in that presentation where you can slow down and develop your sight picture, rather than ambushing your brain at the end of the draw stroke. Slow down, be safe, have fun and good luck!

Scoring: Hits are scored as anything inside the circles.

Beginner: Place a single TG2 target at 7 yards, high center chest height. With a holstered weapon, on the buzzer, draw your weapon and engage the green dot (#1) with 1 round. Take note of your hits, and consider your tempo. Do this 2 more times, returning to the holster between each single-round engagement. Conduct the same 3-round engagement on the gray dot (#2).

Intermediate:  Same as beginner. Place the TG2 target at 10 yards.

Expert Distance:  Same as beginner. Place the TG2 target at 15 yards.

Off of the X

Target: TG5
Load: One 4-round magazine
Additional Equipment: Pro Timer

Notes: This drill asks us to incorporate lateral movement into our drawstroke and initial engagement - an important addition to our skill as defensive shooters. Make certain that your final angle of engagement still allows for a proper backstop and safety. Ensure that the area around your feet is clear of obstruction so you remain standing throughout the drill. There may be a desire to concentrate on your feet while conducting this drill - DON'T. The most important part of this drill (as always) is conducting an accurate engagement. Slow down, be safe, have fun and good luck!

Scoring: Hits are scored as anything inside the gray oval. Misses are assessed as 2 second penalties.

Beginner: Place a single TG5 target at 5 yards, head height. With a holstered weapon, on the buzzer, draw your weapon while moving swiftly to the right and engage the TG5 with 2 rounds. Record your time and score. Re-holster your weapon and move back to the center. On the buzzer, draw your weapon while moving swiftly to the left and engage the TG5 with 2 rounds. Record your time and score.

Intermediate:  Same as beginner. Place the TG5 target at 7 yards.

Expert Distance:  Same as beginner. Place the TG5 target at 10 yards.

Immediate Action

Target: TG3
Load: One 8-round (live) magazine
Additional Equipment: Pro Timer, 4 dummy (inert) rounds

Notes: As rare as it may seem, modern semi-automatic pistols do occasionally fail. We must know how to efficiently process the problem and get the weapon back on target. There are a few ways to accomplish this: tap, rack, re-engage (or assess) is the most common. Load your magazine with 8 live rounds and 4 dummy rounds, randomly placed. Slow down, be safe, have fun and good luck!

Scoring: Hits are scored as the TG3 target dictates. Timing is collected for each shot. Record every engagement that involves a dummy round and report your best combination (Time/Hit)

Beginner: Place a single TG3 target at 5 yards, high center chest height. With a holstered weapon, on the buzzer, engage the center (orange dot) of the TG3 with two rounds. If the shot string is interrupted by a failure (dummy round), conduct immediate action and finish the engagement. Holster and complete iterations until the magazine is empty. Record your best time and score.

Intermediate:  Same as beginner. Place the TG3 target at 7 yards.

Expert Distance:  Same as beginner. Place the TG3 target at 10 yards.

Low Percentage, Long Distance

Target: TG7
Load: One 6-round magazine
Additional Equipment: Pro Timer

Notes: Much like other low percentage target drills, this drill supports a complex group of skills that should act in concert to deliver a product weighted toward accuracy but modified by speed. The new variable is a bit more distance. Your shooter solution should reflect more time to read the front sight. Slow down, have fun and good luck!

Scoring: Hits inside the orange triangle are no penalty. Hits on the light gray (rear) oval but not touching the orange triangle are assessed as .5 second penalties. Hits on the dark gray oval (front, hostage) are assessed as 3 second penalties.

Beginner: Place a single TG7 target at 7 yards at roughly head height. With a holstered weapon, on the buzzer, engage the light gray oval on the TG7 with two rounds. Holster and complete two more iterations. Record your best time, adding hit penalties.

Intermediate:  Same as beginner. Place the TG7 target at 10 yards.

Expert Distance:  Same as beginner. Place the TG7 target at 15 yards.
